OCR: ROBOTS IN FILM THE LAWS OF ROBOTICS INTERPLANETARY SPACECRAFT Solar sails The term "solar sails" was coined by an American engineer named Garwin in a scientific article in 1953. Several years later, science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clark expanded on the concept in a short story entitled "Wind from the Sun" which describes a race of sun-driven spacecraft from the Earth to the Moon. In the TV version of Ray Bradbury's "Martian Chronicles," this is precisely the means of navigation used by the Martians. In 1973, NASA became very interested in using this concept to send a space probe to study Halley's Comet. A full-fledged research program was launched. Four years later, in 1977, NASA abandoned the program for budgetary reasons, even though it had been proven that the "solar sail" concept was technically feasible. Several disgruntled engineers that had participated in the project then left the Jet Propulsion Lab to create the World Space Foundation and continue their research. MARS BETAT
